Ginger Nut Taste Test: Aldi, M&S, Sainsbury's & More vs McVitie's
Ginger Nut Taste Test: Supermarket Brands vs McVitie's

A taste test of ginger nut biscuits from McVitie's, Aldi, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, and M&S has found that Sainsbury's and M&S both scored 8/10, beating McVitie's, which scored 7/10. Aldi's version scored just 4/10, with a bland flavour and a crumbly texture.

The test, conducted by Ellen Jenne of What's On, compared the classic McVitie's Ginger Nut against supermarket alternatives to see if any could rival the original. Ginger biscuits were once bypassed by the tester as a child, but with age came a more discerning palate.

McVitie's and Aldi Results

McVitie's Ginger Nuts, priced at £1.60, were described as crisp, slightly challenging on the teeth, and generously infused with ginger. They boasted the most intense and robust ginger flavour of all the biscuits sampled. They snapped satisfyingly, though were not quite as hard as recalled. The tester noted they are amongst the priciest biscuits on the market, but that is the premium paid for a well-established brand. Total: 7/10.

Aldi's version, priced at 59p, appeared almost identical at first glance but a single bite revealed how different they were. The biscuit dough felt considerably shorter and more crumbly than expected from a ginger biscuit, bearing a closer resemblance to a digestive. There was a notable absence of ginger heat on the palate, and the biscuits were described as decidedly bland. Total: 4/10.

Sainsbury's and Waitrose Compared

Sainsbury's biscuits, also priced at 59p, struck a delicate balance with their ginger flavouring, less intense than McVitie's. The biscuit was marginally thicker than those from Waitrose, delivering a noticeable and satisfying snap. The tester noted they were not so tough that they'd break a tooth. Sainsbury's was described as a quality biscuit that does precisely what it promises, offering excellent value for money. Total: 8/10.

Waitrose's biscuits, priced at 85p, came closer to the recollection of traditional ginger biscuits in terms of texture, providing a marginally firmer snap than Sainsbury's. They bore a striking resemblance to Sainsbury's, with the latter's biscuits being fractionally thicker. The tester concluded that Waitrose presents a decent ginger biscuit that shouldn't be dismissed. Total: 7/10.

M&S Takes the Top Spot

M&S's biscuits, priced at 75p, proved by far the most robust of the bunch, much more like the Ginger Nuts occasionally sampled in childhood. The flavour profile closely matched McVitie's while avoiding any sense of being overpowering. One subtle distinction was the apparent absence of those characteristic fissures across the biscuit's surface.

Similar to Sainsbury's, M&S offers excellent flavour combined with a particularly firm snap. The tester concluded that for those seeking a supermarket biscuit to evoke childhood memories, M&S can deliver that experience. Total: 8/10.
