Barry Ferguson refused a "cuddle" from Celtic rival Charlie Mulgrew as the former Rangers skipper and the ex-Parkhead defender reunited on Go Radio's Football Show for the first time since clashing at the Tennent's Sixes.
After the six-a-side final between Celtic and Rangers legends, a heated moment unfolded as Mulgrew celebrated the Hoops' 5-4 victory. Mulgrew admitted he told Ferguson and Ian Durrant on the Rangers bench to "get it up yous" at full-time, and footage from the Rangers dressing room later emerged showing the ex-pros were not taking the defeat lightly.
Emotions Run High After Final
Ferguson joked: "We met after the game when I had to stop Charlie from celebrating." Mulgrew responded: "We never fell out. Emotions run high, you win the game and a lot of things lead up to it. Amazing feeling. If it was me on the other end I would have been disappointed. We get the win and emotions run high. All good now."
Ferguson added: "I got told that during the weekend quite a lot of things were missed on camera. At the end of the day you win, people celebrate differently. Charlie was going for it, but I just went on the pitch and shook his hand. I am fine with it. It is over and done with."
Rangers Ran Out of Steam
Reflecting on the tournament, Ferguson said: "Of course you want to win. I will be honest with you we were really good during the tournament, but we ran out of a bit of steam. I could see it in the semi-final to be honest with you. I was kind of playing the same five players."
He added: "You go two-up and to be fair to Celtic they come back then we go 4-2 and then we ran out of a bit of steam. Overall, it was a really good weekend. From a Rangers point of view, bumping into guys I had played with, not seen for a while, managed and guys who I didn’t really know and to be fair to Rangers they looked after us brilliantly."
Mulgrew said: "You get battered 7-1 [on the Saturday, before the final]. That is never nice. We are up against a team with better legs than us and it is really difficult for us to win. Charlie Adam done a celebration...I am talking about it personally... someone starts doing keepy-ups at 2-0 and I got megged twice from Martyn Waghorn so my head goes. Then you are like, right we need to win this. You are in the heat of the battle."
Mulgrew's Cuddle Rejected
Mulgrew added: "I honestly felt like I had won a league title. That was the same feeling. I woke up the next morning and I was a bit like ‘jeez how did I get to those levels of emotions’ it is hard to explain. It is a build up from the weekend, that is what happens."
Mulgrew rounded off the chat by insisting he would give Ferguson a "wee cuddle" at the end of the show, and true to his word he embraced Ferguson, as the former rejected the offer - declaring "I am not cuddly guy". Despite this, Mulgrew continued and grabbed his Tennent's Sixes' rival.
