TSB and Santander have confirmed that no further branch closures will take place before 2028, covering all 480 branches the two banks operate across the UK. The announcement follows a wave of high street bank closures across the country as services move online.
No further closures before 2028
TSB currently has 175 branches and Santander has 305, giving a combined total of 480. In a message to customers, TSB Chief Executive Nicola Bannister said: “I’ve got some good news about our branches. I’m pleased to confirm that we won’t be closing any additional TSB or Santander UK branches before 2028, at the earliest.”
She added: “That matters, because I hear consistently from customers how much they value having a local branch and the help they get from our Money Confidence Experts. And I couldn’t agree more. I know that branches continue to play an important role in supporting local communities, giving customers somewhere to turn for personal, face-to-face support. Whether you visit every week or only occasionally, it’s reassuring to know your branch is there for you when you want to talk things through.”
Previous closures and wider trend
Earlier this year, Santander confirmed it would close 58 of its branches in 2026 and 2027. Once these closures are complete, there will be no further closures until 2028. The announcement comes as other major banks also reduce their branch networks. Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, part of Lloyds Banking Group, are shutting at least 247 branches in 2026 and 2027. NatWest and the Royal Bank of Scotland will also close at least 49 branches in the same period.
A spokesperson for Santander UK previously said of the closures: “In response to a continuing and sizeable shift towards customers using digital banking, we are making changes to our branches to better support our customers. We will continue to invest in both our branch network - comprising of full-service branches, counter-free branches, reduced-hour branches, Santander Locals, and our increasingly popular Work Cafés – as well as our digital banking services, so we can be there to support our customers however they choose to bank with us.”
