WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre in Burscough, West Lancashire, is opening what it believes to be the longest stretch of continuous stepping stones in Europe. The 68-metre-long path features 143 steps across one of the centre's lakes, providing visitors with an immersive way to connect with wetland nature.
New attraction set for summer opening
The stepping stones are part of the centre's 'Wet Meadow and Self-Guided Bug Hunting' area, an interactive space that opened in summer 2025. Beginning at the end of a recently introduced sunken walkway, the stones will guide guests across the water. Families can explore winding paths through wildflower meadows, use identification charts to discover miniature wildlife, and now traverse the new stepping stones.
Victoria Fellowes, visitor experience manager at WWT Martin Mere, said: "Families have been coming for generations to walk along our existing stepping stones by our Chilean flamingos. We’ve seen how many people use the stones and take their photos. Now, we want to make this experience even better by creating a new set on the other side of our centre of what we believe are the longest stepping stones in Europe."
Part of ongoing developments
The centre has been adding new attractions, including a wet play area that opened last year. The stepping stones are expected to attract visitors from across the region and beyond, included with admission tickets or WWT membership. The attraction will launch in time for the centre's Dragonfly Festival this summer, featuring outdoor games, science shows, and dragonfly discos.
An official opening date is expected in early to mid July, with further details to be announced on the centre's website.
