Brooke George, a 23-year-old British TikToker from Gravesend, Kent, has been detained in Dubai for five days without access to a lawyer or translator, according to the human rights organisation Detained in Dubai. She faces a charge of premeditated murder that carries the death penalty by firing squad.
Arrest and Charges
George was arrested on Monday, 22 June, after allegedly killing a man she met online and began a relationship with. She claims she acted in self-defence after he attacked her. The incident occurred following a night out in Jumeirah Village, where she says the 26-year-old man became violent. She booked a flight back to the UK but returned to his flat to retrieve her passport, where she was allegedly punched in the face and attacked, leaving her fearing for her life. In the chaos, she grabbed a kitchen knife and acted in self-defence, according to Detained in Dubai.
Lack of Legal Representation
George is being held at Bur Dubai Police Station and has not yet spoken with a lawyer or been provided with a translator. Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, expressed grave concern: 'Knowing Brooke is facing a charge that carries the death penalty, I cannot overstate how concerned I am for her. Brooke is just 23-years-old. Only days ago she experienced what she describes as a terrifying and traumatic ordeal.' Stirling added that each day without legal counsel 'places her at an even greater disadvantage.'
Alleged Mistreatment
Detained in Dubai also reported that George was forced to strip naked in front of male officers at the police station, an experience she described as 'deeply humiliating and distressing.' The organisation has been supporting her since her arrest and has called for urgent access to legal representation.
Background and Context
George, a former John Lewis employee, had previously travelled to Dubai to meet the man she encountered on Facebook. During her initial visit, she had the 'time of her life,' but upon returning, he allegedly became 'increasingly controlling and abusive.' After the alleged attack, she attempted to leave the UAE but was apprehended at the airport and charged with premeditated murder. If convicted, she could face execution by firing squad, reflecting the UAE's stringent legal system.
