Emmerdale's Dr Caitlin Todd has been killed in a dramatic twist, sparking outrage among ITV soap viewers who decry the lack of justice for Charity Dingle. The villainous doctor, who sexually assaulted Charity, was found dead in a pool of blood at the end of Wednesday's episode (July 1), leaving fans frustrated that her storyline concluded without legal accountability.
Dr Todd's Reign of Bullying and Manipulation
Dr Todd initially appeared as Jacob Sugden's mentor but subjected him to severe bullying, nearly forcing him to leave his hospital position. Facing HR intervention, she opted for early retirement but continued to manipulate Jacob after moving into the village. She then targeted Charity Dingle, threatening to expose that baby Leyla is not Sarah and Jacob's child, and demanded money from Charity's share of the Woolpack pub.
In a harrowing episode, Todd kissed a drunken Charity, who rejected her and fell asleep. Todd then hovered over her, sneering, "Wake up. Drunk, disgusting w****! One too many? Bad, bad girl. You should know better than to lose control." She proceeded to assault Charity, unzipping her trousers before Charity awoke and begged her to stop. Despite being reported to the police, Todd was released due to insufficient evidence and moved to Sheffield for a new job.
Charity's Confession and Mack's Revenge
Charity eventually confessed everything to her partner Mackenzie Boyd, including her one-night stand with Ross Barton that led to Leyla's pregnancy, as well as the assault and blackmail. Encouraged by Mack and newcomer Serena Sugden to report the blackmail, Charity was told the cases would be treated separately. Mack, spiraling, was urged by Kev Townsend to seek revenge and confronted Dr Todd in Sheffield.
During their confrontation, Todd denied the assault was non-consensual and taunted Mack, claiming no jury would believe Charity. The episode ended with Todd lying lifeless on the floor, suggesting she had been murdered.
Fan Outrage Over Lack of Legal Justice
Emmerdale fans expressed fury on social media, criticizing the decision to kill off the abuser rather than having her face legal consequences. On X, @eternitydropped wrote: "If you're brave enough to tell a female-on-female sexual assault story, be brave enough to show the abuser facing justice. Killing them off isn't accountability." @tvmusings26 commented: "Emmerdale kills abuser Corrie kills abuser STOP KILLING ABUSERS FOR YOUR PATHETIC WHO DUNNIT STORIES!! This is such a terrible message, think of what sort of audience you may have! FFS!" @snationed posted: "A workplace bullying storyline involving Jacob ending like this with Mack at the centre of it all. No justice for Jacob or Charity..." On Reddit, u/editedmorph added: "I’m not impressed by it tbh, I always want justice to be delivered legally in these cases. People should know what a vile person the perpetrator is.."
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX and YouTube from 7am.
