Emily Atack shouldn't return for Inbetweeners reboot

Reports have emerged that the Inbetweeners reboot is being held up by an alleged feud between James Buckley and Emily Atack, with Buckley reportedly issuing an 'it's her or me' ultimatum during the original movies. However, the character Atack played, Charlotte Hinchcliffe, shouldn't return for the revival, as her story reached a natural conclusion in the TV series.

Charlotte's story was complete

Charlotte played a big role in the show as Will's 'one true love', but their relationship never ended on a cliffhanger. The show gave a definitive end to their 'romance', one that worked for both characters. Charlotte only flirted with Will to get one over on her ex Donovan, and while she was charmed by his humour, she was never really that into him.

In the Fashion Show episode, Will abandons his moral stance on modelling to impress her. Charlotte calls him sweet and kind, saying she wishes she had a boyfriend like him, but when Will asks 'why not him', she bursts out laughing and says 'no, not you, someone like you'. This was a sad but important moment for Will, teaching him that the fantasy partner he built in his head was just a fantasy.

Will's development would be undermined

Bringing Charlotte back risks undermining the character development Will gained from that rejection. In the first movie, he moves on with Alison, who is actually attracted to him, though she's missing from the sequel. A cameo from Charlotte could turn a memorable character into nostalgia bait or reduce her to an object to be lusted over.

Atack doesn't need the show

Emily Atack has been successful since the show ended, most recently on Rivals. Just because fans are excited to relive their youth doesn't mean Atack has to relive hers. The Inbetweeners doesn't need her, and she doesn't need the show.
