Liverpool investment: Bezos consortium to take 38% stake in club
Bezos consortium to take 38% stake in Liverpool

The consortium including Amazon boss Jeff Bezos that has agreed to invest in Liverpool will assume a share of almost 40% in the club.

It was confirmed on Friday that 1892 Holdings, a consortium led by former Queens Park Rangers director Amit Bhatia, will take on a minority equity stake in the Reds after successful negotiations with owners Fenway Sports Group.

Initial suggestions were the investment was for between 30% and a third of the club, which is valued in the deal as between $5billion (£4.4bn) and $6bn (£3.7bn).

Larger Share Than Expected

But the ECHO understands the share - as initially reported by The Athletic - is actually 38%. The value of the investment, which was first thought to be around £1.4bn, would instead be closer to £2bn.

FSG presently retain ownership of Liverpool but, as part of the agreement, 1892 Holdings have an option to purchase a controlling stake within the next 12 months. There is, though, no formal commitment for this to happen, with any further investment not predetermined in the deal.

Consortium Members and Board Changes

The consortium consists of investments from Bhatia and the Mittal Family Trusts, the K5 Sports fund, for whom Amazon chief Bezos is the lead investor, and EE Capital, the family office of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and his wife Elaine.

Once the investment deal receives regulatory approval, Bhatia will become Liverpool's new vice-chairman and join a newly-expanded board that also includes Elaine Saverin of EE Capital and Bryan Baum from K5 Sports.
