Dolly Parton dies aged 80 leaving £500m fortune and legacy

Country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, her family confirmed on August 25. The singer passed away peacefully in Nashville, according to a social media video shared by her nephew.

Fortune estimated between $450m and $650m

At the time of her death, Parton's fortune was estimated to range from $450 million to $650 million. The wealth was accumulated through her music, acting, songwriting, Hollywood film productions, and all her commercial and branding enterprises.

The remarkable net worth stems from decades of work as a country performer that began in the 1960s. She boasted 41 top-10 country albums and 25 No.1 hit singles. During her solo career, she sold over 100 million albums, excluding collaborations, guest appearances, and tracks she composed for other artists.

Music, film, and business ventures

Whitney Houston's rendition of "I Will Always Love You" reportedly generated the country legend $20 million alone, becoming the best-selling single of all time by a female performer.

Parton also found success in acting, starring in films such as 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and Steel Magnolias. In 1986, she established her own production company, Sandollar Productions, with long-time business associate Sandy Gallin. The enterprise produced films including Father of the Bride, Fly Away Home, and the 1992 movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The Buffy film did not achieve immediate success but later became a cult classic. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer television programme (1997-2003) also became legendary and continues to attract new generations of fans. The musician reportedly played a "fundamental if often forgotten role" in securing the show's production. In recent years, she worked on an Emmy-winning production deal with Netflix.

Dollywood and other enterprises

Parton also established numerous other commercial ventures, including a perfume, Scent From Above, and a range of cake mixes in collaboration with Duncan Hines. Among her most legendary business pursuits was ownership of the East Tennessee theme park, Dollywood.

Her family's official obituary stated: "A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see, Dolly will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting, but also her wit, warmth, and kindness that made us all feel like family."

"Dolly Parton's legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience. With a seven-decade career, she inspired multiple generations of artists and fans with her music and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. Her songs will continue to resonate with people of all ages, and her philanthropic work will have a lasting impact."

While the precise cause of death has not been disclosed, she had been facing recent health issues, including battles with dehydration, dizziness, and kidney stones, which led her to delay performances and travel during her final year.
