DJ Spoony reveals health update and new morning routine after brain surgery
DJ Spoony health update: morning routine after brain surgery

BBC radio star DJ Spoony has shared a positive health update years after undergoing major brain surgery in 2024, revealing he is "reclaiming the morning" as part of his recovery. The 56-year-old, whose real name is John Joseph, suffered a bleed on his brain around Christmas time in 2024 and has admitted he is "really grateful" to have made a full recovery.

Praise for the NHS

The disc jockey was full of praise for the NHS for taking "really, really good care" of him during his time in need, labelling the "boots on the ground" as "phenomenal". Opening up on his time in hospital, he said: "The scariest part of it was being on the ward and seeing people that had similar injuries to me, and where they were with their injuries... I thanked my lucky stars, really."

As he insists he is "golden" now, he said he was happy to get back into normality. That, for him, meant remaining in an upbeat and positive manner as he plans to make the most of his life. And that starts with a productive morning.

New morning routine

"I've always loved the mornings," he exclusively told the Mirror as he helped launch Nutella's Summer Breakfast Club. "I've always been very much a morning person, whether that's getting up and walking Prince [his dog], or going to play a real early round of golf... Mornings are the time to get active and really have some fun. Best time of the day."

He went on: "You'll never hear me talking about being lazy in the morning, no way! Mornings are the time to get active and... and really have some fun. Best time of the day." He insisted that it's just a "special time wherever you are in the world".

Nutella Breakfast Club

Spoony's comments come as he linked up with Nutella to create his ideal playlist for their Breakfast Club. "Doing one [a playlist] that is specifically around the morning time meant that I could have put some stuff on there like Mini Riperton," he said. "Tunes that sound like they recorded it first thing in the morning."

Jokingly changing his moniker to DJ Teaspoony for the campaign, his new title referred to the 15 grams of Nutella recommended that fits perfectly on a teaspoon. He added it had been a lovely campaign to be a part of, saying: "I very much believe that music sets our mood, whatever our mood is. If we're feeling happy, if we're feeling tired, if we're feeling sombre, there's a soundtrack to that. And doing one that is specifically around the morning time meant that I could have put some stuff on there like which is really upbeat."

DJ Spoony officially rebranded as DJ TeaSpoony, nodding to Nutella's recommended single heaped teaspoon serving. The newly named DJ is encouraging families to bring more fun to their summer mornings, with easy breakfast recipes and a specially curated Nutella Breakfast Club playlist.
