Dame Helen Mirren honoured with Golden Globe lifetime award

Dame Helen Mirren, the celebrated British actress, has been honoured with a prestigious lifetime achievement award at a major Hollywood ceremony, proving her status as an enduring icon of stage and screen.

A Vision in Pink on the Red Carpet

The 80-year-old Oscar winner made a stunning entrance at the Golden Eve celebration in Beverly Hills, a precursor to the main Golden Globes ceremony. She captivated onlookers in a custom, figure-hugging pink gown designed by Stella McCartney, showcasing her timeless elegance and defying conventional beauty standards.

The event, held ahead of the Golden Globes on Sunday 11 January 2026, saw Mirren become the 71st recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award. This special honour recognises outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.

A Tribute from a Co-Star and a Humble Acceptance

Mirren was presented with her award by her long-time friend and colleague, Harrison Ford. The actor fondly recalled their first collaboration on the 1986 film The Mosquito Coast and their recent work together on the Paramount+ series 1923.

"We had three lovely children," Ford joked about their on-screen family in the earlier film. "The script required all of us to refer to Helen as 'Mother.' Forty years later, I got to work with her again... I was an afterthought." He praised her as an "undeniable screen presence" with a powerful commitment to her craft.

In her characteristically witty and poignant acceptance speech, Dame Helen reframed the award's significance. “I prefer to think of this as an ongoing reflection of my career rather than a eulogy,” she stated, expressing her hope that her creative journey was far from over.

Joining the Ranks of Legends

With this accolade, Dame Helen Mirren joins an illustrious group of past DeMille Award winners, including Meryl Streep, Sidney Poitier, Barbra Streisand, and Tom Hanks. Her own legendary career is decorated with the highest honours: an Academy Award for portraying Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen (2007), three Golden Globes, and a host of Emmy, SAG, BAFTA, and Tony Awards.

Made a Dame in 2003 and married to American film director Taylor Hackford, 81, Mirren remains a formidable and beloved figure in international cinema. The Golden Eve gala also honoured Sarah Jessica Parker with the Carol Burnett Award for her television achievements, attended by her husband Matthew Broderick and son James.

The main Golden Globes ceremony, set for 11 January 2026, will be hosted for a second time by comedian Nikki Glaser, following a night that celebrated the lasting legacy of one of Britain's greatest acting talents.
