Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere, children of Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere, have appeared on the cover of Vogue, 34 years after their parents graced the magazine in a marriage spread. The September issue features the 24-year-old model and 26-year-old actor, who were interviewed to promote their new TV show The Shards, based on Bret Easton Ellis' novel of the same name.
Cover shoot and parents' history
For the cover shoot, Kaia and Homer each had an arm around each other as they smiled at the camera, a more platonic pose than the one their parents chose for their 1992 shoot. In that picture, Cindy, now 60, and Richard, 76, were pressed together cheek to cheek, with Richard placing a protective hand on Cindy's arm. The tagline read: "Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere on marriage, meditation and MTV."
The couple were married from 1991 to 1995. Cindy went on to marry Rande Gerber in 1998, with whom she has son Presley and daughter Kaia. Richard married Carey Lowell in 2002, with whom he had Homer, and after a contested divorce from 2013 to 2016, he married Spanish activist Alejandra Silva, who is 33 years younger, in 2018. They have two sons, born in 2019 and 2020.
Meeting and 'nepo babies' talk
During the interview, Homer revealed that twenty minutes into meeting Kaia, he asked if they should acknowledge their parents' marriage, and she agreed and moved on. Kaia also spoke about their status as 'nepo babies', a term for children of famous people who get a head start in their careers. She admitted benefiting from being Cindy's daughter but said she still doubts others: "I also find myself doing it to other nepo babies, thinking, like, Okay, show me why you deserve this job."
Kaia said she told Homer, "Unfortunately with this show, it’s not like you’re just any unknown actor and people will judge you as an unknown actor. But what that’s done for me is make me want to work harder." Homer added he initially rejected acting like his dad, having been a sports star in secondary school and hating questions about becoming an actor.
Homer's acting career and father's guidance
Homer has little acting experience, with roles in White Lies and four episodes of Euphoria outside The Shards. He told PEOPLE Magazine he called his mother, not his father, when landing the role. Richard still helped him: "It’s not like, ‘What should I do in this scene?’ It’s more like, how to carry yourself on set, how to make an acting career work in a way that’s sustainable. And for that, he’s been the most invaluable resource. I mean, truly better than I could possibly hope for, from anyone."
