Corrie star Sydney Martin gets major boost after stroke storyline

Coronation Street star Sydney Martin has been flooded with support from her co-stars and fans after she was given a major boost following her work on the recent stroke storyline for her character, Betsy Swain.

Landing the role of Betsy marked Rossendale's Sydney's big acting break, and she's since been involved in some of Corrie's biggest storylines, with her biggest to date currently ongoing after the teenage character suffered a stroke at the age of 18.

It was later confirmed that the strokes, as Betsy had a second while in the hospital, were the result of neck artery damage from a temporary loss of circulation.

Betsy's recovery and fashion college interview

As viewers saw, doctors spoke to Betsy about the cause, which is when the teen had to explain to her mum that her boyfriend, Dylan Wilson, had strangled her during consensual sex, despite both believing the pressure applied was minimal.

Since the initial stroke scenes, Betsy has been seen starting her recovery, first in the hospital and now back at home on the Street, and last month, after a few weeks' absence from screens, with the help of her physiotherapist, Betsy was seen standing up for the first time since her stroke and attempted to take steps, leaving Lisa emotional.

Betsy has since been making progress with her recovery, and has been supported by her family in applying for a fashion college, with her seen heading to her interview in scenes aired during this week's episodes of Corrie. Betsy was also seen deciding to put her relationship with Dylan on ice, both deciding it was better off to be friends.

TV Choice Awards nomination

Following the heartbreaking and worrying scenes, it's been revealed that Sydney is among those nominated for the Best Performance gong at the TV Choice Awards 2027, alongside her Corrie co-stars Tina O'Brien (Sarah Platt), Gareth Pierce (Todd Grimshaw), Sue Devaney (Debbie Webster), Jacob Roberts (Kit Green) and Mikey North (Gary Windass).

Corrie is also nominated in the 'Best Soap' category, while Junade Khan (Idris Nazir), Olivia Frances Brown (Jodie Ramsey) and Anya Dewin (Lucy Parkinson) have been nominated for 'Best Newcomer'.

Support from co-stars and fans
