Coronation Street fans believe they have worked out an epic Christmas storyline on the cobbles, and it could involve the comeback of a Weatherfield legend. Viewers have speculated that a soap icon could make a shock return after several years away, with some suggesting Gail Platt (Helen Worth) might stage an unexpected comeback.
Christmas is rarely a peaceful time on the ITV soap. Over the years, audiences have witnessed countless dramatic events unfold during the festive season, including the arrival of residents such as David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) and tragic departures.
Sarah Platt's dramatic storyline
This year's Christmas period is set to be equally eventful, as soap enthusiasts are convinced a former cobbles legend could be making a return in a significant Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) twist. Sarah is currently imprisoned after she killed Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) in self-defence.
Sarah fatally struck Theo in April when she attacked him with a metal pole atop scaffolding, causing him to plunge over the edge to the ground below. She then sought assistance from former flame and friend Gary Windass (Mikey North) to conceal the crime.
Despite police officer boyfriend Kit Green's (Jacob Roberts) attempts to help her escape justice, Sarah was arrested on suspicion of killing Theo. She has since been remanded in custody and is awaiting her trial.
Fans predict Gail's return
Fans have now suggested Sarah's potential prison release could align with the soap's Christmas storyline and the return of a cobbles legend. "What's everyone's prediction for Christmas on Corrie?" questioned one person on a Coronation Street Facebook fan page.
Someone else contributed: "I think Sarah will be out of prison by then." A third then proposed Sarah's mum Gail Platt could stage an unexpected return: "Same, maybe Gail will come back." A fourth concurred and stated: "Yes I thought that!"
Gail's exit from the cobbles
In June 2024, it emerged that Gail star Helen Worth was leaving the soap, with Helen declaring she believed it was the "perfect time" to depart "the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world".
Gail's exit revolved around her wedding to Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson). On Christmas Day 2024, Gail said her goodbyes in an emotional hour-long special after she and Jesse left for France to embark on their new life together.
