Torphichen, a small village near Bathgate in West Lothian, sits roughly halfway between Edinburgh and Glasgow, making it an easy day out from either city. The village is about 40 minutes from Glasgow and 55 minutes from Edinburgh by car.
A cosy pub with a roaring fire
The highlight of Torphichen, especially during wet and chilly autumn weather, is the Torphichen Inn in the heart of the village. This traditional pub dates back to 1872 and was previously known as the Burnside Inn. It features a wood-burning stove and offers Scottish ales, craft beers, home-cooked meals, regular live music, and friendly service.
One recent visitor wrote in a Google review: "I wish I could say something different from the other recent reviewers about how fabulous the food, atmosphere, and the host Kenny were! This was the first time I tried haggis and it was excellent. My husband ordered the steak pie, and I ordered the salmon. Both were flavourful and delicious."
Another customer shared: "Fantastic place to sit by the fire and catch up with friends over a pint. Thoroughly enjoyed my visit."
Historic sites and outdoor activities
The village also hosts Torphichen Preceptory, the remnants of the headquarters of Scotland's Knights Hospitaller. Dating back to the 12th century, it sheltered the sick and poor visiting the Holy Land and gave military protection to pilgrims. Most of the current structure was built in the 1400s, with only a small fragment of the knights' house remaining.
Other attractions include The Craigs Campsite, a 23-acre site offering camping and outdoor experiences, with an adventure play area, activities like soft archery, backwoods cooking, and GPS trails, plus its own labyrinth. Visitors can also walk up Cairnpapple Hill, a Neolithic ceremonial monument thought to have been used for ceremonies and burials as far back as 4,000 years ago, offering views across the Forth Valley.
