Channel 4 News presenter Matt Frei was forced to apologise on Wednesday night after a guest swore live on air during coverage of the solar eclipse. The incident occurred as Frei spoke with a group waiting for the total eclipse off the coast of Barcelona.
Live Blunder During Eclipse Coverage
Reporting on the event, which has been dubbed a 'once-in-a-generation' phenomenon, Frei introduced the group: Kristin, Ally, Chris and Andrea. As they described the scene as "surreal," with the sky turning "completely dark," one member of the quartet exclaimed "Oh s**t!" as the full eclipse took place.
Following the incident, Frei addressed viewers: "I gather there was some swearing and I didn't hear it, but I apologise to our more sensitive viewers for that."
Eclipse Captivates UK and Europe
The solar eclipse reached its totality in the UK at 7.10pm, with a partial eclipse visible for the first time since 1999. More than 90% of the sun was obscured by the moon in certain regions. While the UK experienced a partial eclipse, Greenland, Iceland and Spain enjoyed a total eclipse, with the moon completely covering the sun.
Some UK spectators managed to catch a glimpse of the spectacle, but others expressed disappointment on X, calling the eclipse "underwhelming." One user tweeted: "The eclipse from the UK was so underwhelming idk about you guys but in my area it was still way too sunny to tell." Another agreed: "Unless you had those special glasses the #eclipse in the UK was all a bit meh." A third added: "They talked up that eclipse a bit too much in the UK didn't they. It was very underwhelming compared to 1999."
