Carrick Press Conference: Martinez Apology and Leeds Build-Up Live

Michael Carrick will speak to the media this afternoon ahead of Manchester United's game against Leeds, with Lisandro Martinez's apology expected to dominate the agenda.

United lost 2-0 at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night. They competed well with last season's Champions League semi-finalists until Leny Yoro was sent off, but Lisandro Martinez's comments dominated the post-match discussion.

Martinez apologises after clear-the-air talks

Martinez ripped into United and Jason Wilcox for failing to invest adequately in the squad over the summer. He released a statement a day later and released another on Thursday, apologising for his comments in the latter.

The apology followed clear-the-air talks between Martinez, Carrick and the club's leadership after training on Thursday, so the United boss will be quizzed about what disciplinary action the defender has faced.

United sources have said any internal disciplinary actions will remain private, but it's thought Martinez has received a fine over his comments.

Fans back Martinez in poll

In a poll conducted by the Manchester Evening News this week, 95% of nearly 10,000 voters said they agreed with Martinez's comments. It's clear Martinez was just saying what many fans were thinking, but was he wrong to say it publicly and therefore right to apologise?

Martinez was one of the last players to report to Carrington on Thursday, and a meeting was held to clear the air following training.

Carrick will speak to the media this afternoon and we'll bring you build-up from Carrington and everything the boss has to say. Today's press conference promises to be a fascinating one, although Martinez's statement last night has poured cold water on some of the drama we were expecting. But Carrick will still be asked about the situation as he looks to put the issue to bed.
