Brendan Cole: Delta Goodrem 'too good' for Strictly

Brendan Cole has said Delta Goodrem is “too good” for Strictly Come Dancing, suggesting her flawless performances remove the jeopardy needed to win the Glitterball trophy. The former pro spoke to Sky Vegas after Delta announced she would miss icons week due to a rib injury.

Delta's 'flawless' performances a problem

Brendan said: “Delta is great, but the problem Delta's going to have is she's too good. We've had two weeks now where she's done pretty much almost flawless performances. If she continues that week upon week upon week, people will just be thinking 'It's Delta again. She's very good.'”

He added: “There's no jeopardy when you're watching her performance. At no point did I think, 'This is so good, is it going to remain?' I watched it knowing she was going to be brilliant, and at the end of her dance, she was exactly that, brilliant. It's a tricky one for her because she's never really going to cause any problems.”

Comparing her to last year's contestant Lewis Cope, Brendan said: “Lewis Cope last year was brilliant right the way through, and then right at the last hurdle he did a terrible dance (for him) and got kicked out. I don't believe Delta's going to do a terrible dance. There's nothing in me that thinks she's ever going to do anything that is something other than brilliant.”

Brendan on the pros and the main show

Discussing the professional dancers, Brendan said: “It's funny because with the pros, like with Amy and Aljaz it's not on them whether their celebrity partner is good enough to go through or not, but one can do a lot for the partner. I don’t know some of the newer pros.”

He continued: “I don't know who they are, how they work, what their work ethic is like or what sort of mentality they have. Most pros have the ability to create a brilliant number for their celeb, taking into account their particular skills or weaknesses, which could make the difference. It’s not always that simple and I certainly failed on occasion. One cannot be perfect every week.”

He added: “I do feel for the pros who've got partners who are just not up to scratch. Like Amy or Aljaz, their partners weren’t up to scratch and there is very little they could do about their abilities. You can still do something within your control.”

On Alexis, he said: “Alexis is a great choreographer. I really like what she does. So I don't think she's under pressure because she'll be brilliant. I don't think any of the pros are under that much pressure because most are very competent dancers. They should all be very good at what they do.”

Asked about the Strictly Spoiler leaks, Brendan said: “I don't understand what the relevance is. Who cares about finding out who went out the night before, early? Wait for the results show. It doesn't matter to me. I actually really enjoyed the results show as a show.”

Results show 'brilliant' compared to main show

He praised the results show, saying: “I thought the pro number this week was outstanding. Jason Gilkison did an amazing job on it. It's a worthwhile watch, the results show. I think it's got the jeopardy, it's got the sadness, it's got the euphoria, it's got the fantastic number. It's short. You can watch it in an hour and not feel like you've expended your entire evening.”

He concluded: “The results show is brilliant, in my opinion, compared to the main show. I don't know who is leaking it. I don't know why they do it. It's pointless.”
