Bonnie Tyler funeral brings Swansea to a standstill

Hundreds of fans flooded Swansea city centre for the funeral of Bonnie Tyler following her death last month aged 75. The service took place at Swansea Minster on Monday, August 17, and saw family, friends, and invited guests gather in the church for an hour-long ceremony celebrating the life of the late great singer who they knew as Gaynor Sullivan.

Crowds gather from early morning

Spectators started gathering around the church from 7.30am to pay their respects while others opted to watch the service on a big screen located at St David's Square just next to the church. Crowds cheered and applauded as the hearse, four cars, and two buses carrying the family arrived.

Fans showed their appreciation for the Welsh songstress and her nearest and dearest as they shouted "Bye, bye Bonnie" and "You're a hero" as the singer's husband Robert Sullivan and their family walked in to the church.

Ceremony celebrates her life

The ceremony started at 12pm with her songs If I Sing You A Love Song and It’s A Heartache and later featured tributes, prayers, hymns, and performances from the male voice choir Only Men Aloud who did a rendition of Bonnie's hit song Total Eclipse of the Heart.

The city was full of emotion and also joy as people celebrated the life of Bonnie Tyler. Many people were singing along to the ceremony and reminiscing on fond memories of listening to her music or bumping in to her down the Mumbles.

Final journey through Skewen

After the service the singer made her final journey through her hometown of Skewen before a private family committal and farewell. The funeral procession travelled from Swansea through Fabian Way, Ashleigh Terrace (through Jersey Marine), Pen Y Heol, Burrows Road, Hen Hoel, New Road, Sidling Terrace, Park Avenue, and Peniel Green Road.

Locals gathered the streets to pay tribute to a "Skewen girl", throwing flowers on the hearse to honour the late singer and say their goodbyes. Below are some of the best pictures from the day.
