BBC Sport presenter Kelly Somers has announced she is expecting her second child with her fiancé Max, sharing the news in a heartfelt social media post.
The broadcaster, who covered the England team in America for this summer's World Cup, posted polaroid pictures of her growing bump on Instagram. She wrote in the caption: “So, I didn’t just overeat in America… Beyond my wildest dreams - soon to be a mama of two.”
Congratulatory messages from football stars
Among the comments was former Lioness Fran Kirby, who wrote: “Congratulations,” along with a heart eyes and a red heart emoji. Former Lionesses captain Steph Houghton also wrote: “The best news.”
Former England defender Tyrone Mings wrote: “This is amazing! Congrats to you both,” with a fire emoji. Fellow sports broadcasters Pien Meulensteen and Reshmin Chowdhury shared their delight, writing: “Congrats,” and “Such beautiful news!! Love this for you all.”
Health battle and fertility journey
The news comes after she was originally misdiagnosed with endometriosis in her 20s. After seeing a specialist, she was eventually diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which is now also known as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).
The condition often impacts fertility, with around 70 to 80 percent of those diagnosed struggling to conceive naturally. It makes the news of the second imminent arrival all the more heartwarming.
Keeping the pregnancy secret during the World Cup
Somers knew she was expecting while covering the World Cup, although she decided to keep it a secret. “No one knew,” she said in an interview with The Telegraph this week. “I started the World Cup a size eight and I ended in a size 12.”
Somers was the interviewer for the viral Harry Kane lost voice moment following England's World Cup win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium. “He spoke to me off camera and seemed fine; only when he tried to project his voice for television did it disappear,” she said. “We all needed a collective laugh, and it was provided by Harry Kane.”
It was a game she describes as “probably the best night of my career”.
Somers and her partner have been together for over 12 years and were engaged in 2020. They welcomed their first daughter in November 2023. They want the gender of the new baby to be a surprise.
