BBC viewers praise Paul Heaton specials as 'brilliant'

BBC viewers were thrilled this weekend as the broadcaster paid tribute to the remarkable career of singer-songwriter Paul Heaton with a special collection of his performances and a live concert.

Career retrospective

The 64-year-old, hailed as one of the best British songwriters of his generation, first rose to fame in the 1980s as the frontman of The Housemartins, alongside bandmate Fatboy Slim. Their hits included 'Caravan of Love' and 'Happy Hour', but the group disbanded in 1988, leading Heaton to form The Beautiful South.

Over the years, Heaton has enjoyed a successful solo career, collaborating with artists such as Jacqui Abbott and Rianne Downey.

Saturday night special

On Saturday night (August 8), the BBC aired a special featuring Heaton himself, who provided context and backstories behind some of his best-loved hits. This was followed by his live performance at Sheffield's iconic Bramall Lane from 2025, which included classics from his time in The Housemartins, The Beautiful South, and his solo work.

A synopsis for the concert reads: "Backed by his stellar live band, including regular singing partner Rianne Downey, Paul Heaton delivers a set filled with wit, warmth and unmistakable melodies, performing beloved favourites alongside newer material for an audience at his beloved Sheffield United Football Club."
