The BBC has been forced to cut a crude joke about Victoria Beckham from an episode of Have I Got News For You after complaints were upheld. The broadcaster previously defended the use of the C-word during the November 7, 2025 episode, which saw host Katherine Ryan and comedian Maisie Adam repeatedly deploy the expletive during a discussion about Sir David Beckham.
However, the BBC’s Executive Complaints Unit (ECU) has now ruled that while using the word in the context of David’s alleged leaked emails was editorially justified, a joke linking it directly to his wife was not.
Ruling on the joke
During the episode, Ryan, 42, told the panel: ‘I don’t know that we are allowed to broadcast the C-word, but you did reference Victoria Beckham earlier and we’ll allow that.’ The gag prompted an audible reaction from the studio audience, leading the Canadian comedian to quickly add: ‘I like her really, I didn’t expect that reaction.’
But two viewers were considerably less amused and complained that the remark was gratuitously offensive. Following an investigation, the ECU has now agreed. Its ruling stated that BBC editorial guidelines do not require programmes to avoid causing offence altogether, but any offence caused must be editorially justified.
It accepted that there was justification for the C-word appearing elsewhere in the programme because the panel was discussing an alleged email from David, in which he was reported to have used the expletive himself. However, it found ‘there was no such justification for a comment which presented Victoria Beckham as equivalent to a particularly offensive word’.
Edited version to replace original
As a result, an edited version of the episode will now replace the original currently available on BBC iPlayer. The finding marks something of a U-turn for the broadcaster, which initially stood by the episode after viewers complained about its language last year.
The controversy began during a discussion about David finally receiving his knighthood at Windsor Castle. Private Eye editor Ian Hislop brought up the former England captain’s long-running desire for the honour, prompting Ryan to quote from an email allegedly sent after he failed to receive one in 2013. ‘They’re a bunch of c***s, I expected nothing less,’ she read.
Adam then joked that it would have been ‘poetic’ if King Charles had knighted the footballer before declaring: ‘Arise, you c***.’ That prompted Ryan’s now-doomed Victoria quip.
Initial backlash and defence
At the time, some viewers branded the language ‘unacceptable’, with one writing on X: ‘Heads should roll for allowing the C word to be broadcast at least twice during HIGNFY.’ Another questioned why the expletive had not been cut or bleeped from a pre-recorded programme, while a third described hearing it on the long-running panel show as ‘odd and jarring’.
Ryan appeared rather entertained by the uproar, sharing an article about the backlash on Instagram and joking: ‘And that was just my intro!’ The BBC initially defended the broadcast, explaining that Have I Got News For You is a post-watershed entertainment programme known for discussing current affairs in a humorous and ironic way. It argued that the strong language had been editorially justified because the panel was directly discussing the alleged Beckham emails, and noted that viewers had been given a clear warning before the episode began.
The ECU has now drawn a rather specific line in the sand: apparently quoting the C-word is one thing, calling Posh Spice one is quite another. David has previously disputed material contained in the leaked emails, with his spokesperson saying in 2017 that reports were based on ‘outdated material taken out of context from hacked and doctored private emails’.
He finally received his knighthood in November, saying at the time that he was ‘truly humbled and so grateful for this honour’. Victoria, meanwhile, enthusiastically celebrated her husband’s achievement, with David affectionately referring to the former Spice Girl as ‘My Lady’.
