Newcastle United are in advanced talks with Matthias Jaissle to replace Eddie Howe, with a glowing verdict from Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund already on record.
Freund's praise for Jaissle
Freund, who worked with Jaissle at RB Salzburg, said: "Matthias's qualities speak for themselves. I have known him for a few years already. He is young, ambitious and suits our club really well." He added: "The way he works and develops young players is exceptional. He was our ideal candidate as a result. He is not a big name yet, but we are all about giving young players and also young coaches a chance."
Howe's departure and talks
Howe informed the club of his intention to step down after a 4-1 defeat to Bristol City, having considered his future for several weeks. The situation is said to be amicable. Howe recently said: "Every day as Newcastle manager is a great day for me. I absolutely love the football club and that will never change."
Jaissle, currently at Al Ahli, is already known to Newcastle's ownership due to his work at PIF-owned Al Ahli. He is the front runner to replace Howe.
Summer upheaval
Newcastle have sold Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon to Tottenham and Barcelona respectively, while Bruno Guimaraes is linked with a move to Arsenal. Howe offered a downcast verdict on Guimaraes' future: "What will be, will be. We can’t control the forces that are at play here."
