Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland is set to open its grounds after hours on Wednesday, offering visitors a chance to witness a "once in a generation" solar eclipse. The castle, standing around 150 feet above sea level, provides an "uninterrupted view to the west" essential for seeing the event.
Eclipse Coverage and Viewing
Wednesday's eclipse is expected to be the most visible from the UK and Ireland since 1999, with the North East forecast to see 90% coverage. The best views in the UK will be in the South West, while totality will be visible from Spain.
The event at Bamburgh Castle is one of several across the region, including Kielder Observatory's Eclipse on the Tyne at Baltic Square and the Glasshouse, which has already sold out.
Owner's Excitement
Francis Watson-Armstrong, owner of Bamburgh Castle, said: "Solar eclipses are extraordinary wherever you experience them, but seeing the light change and the landscape darken from the grounds of Bamburgh Castle will be something very special indeed. Getting to a high point with good views towards the west is important for this eclipse and Bamburgh's position around 150 feet above sea level gives us a fantastic vantage point."
He added: "There is also something wonderfully atmospheric about experiencing an event like this inside the castle grounds after hours. As the Moon moves across the Sun and the light begins to fade, we expect things to feel just a little eerie and where better to experience that than somewhere with thousands of years of history?"
Event Details and Tickets
Numbers for the event have been deliberately limited to around 100 to ensure visitors get the best possible views from the castle's west wall, which runs from the windmill to the Clock Tower. Gates open at 7pm with last admission at 7pm, and the event finishes at 9pm.
