The BAFTA Television Awards with P&O Cruises took place on Sunday night at the Royal Festival Hall in London, hosted by Scottish actor Alan Cumming. The ceremony celebrated the best of British television from the past year, with highlights including emotional speeches and a tribute to late stars.
Kevin Lygo, managing director of ITV Studios, received the Special Award for his work on 'Mr Bates vs The Post Office'. Urging broadcasters to continue holding power to account, he said: 'It really falls to us to remember that these are incredibly important things that must continue to be learned.'
Former Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark was awarded the BAFTA Fellowship, the academy's highest honour, receiving a standing ovation. Reflecting on her career, she noted the 'most joyous change in television' has been 'the number of women in senior roles'.
The night also saw a tribute to notable figures who passed away, including Kenneth Cope, Linda Nolan, and Michael Mosley. The P&O Cruises Memorable Moment went to 'Strictly Come Dancing' for Dianne Buswell and Chris McCausland's waltz to 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.
Host Alan Cumming put his own spin on the opening sketch, donning the iconic cloak from 'The Traitors'. He also quizzed Rob Brydon about the infamous fishing trip from 'Gavin and Stacey', but cut him off mid-answer, saying: 'We've got to go straight on with the next award.'
Stars such as Jessie J, Emily Atack, and Maura Higgins dazzled on the red carpet, though some notable names like Mark Rylance and Eddie Redmayne were absent from the nominations.
