The Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool has marked its 180th birthday with a special projection of nostalgic memories and rarely seen archive images. The display, created with the ECHO, was illuminated for the first time on Monday, October 12, and will run nightly until October 21.
Public Memories and Archive Images
Readers were invited to share their memories of the dock in pictures, capturing everything from the opening of Tate Liverpool to Sunday brunches on the waterfront. More than 100 submissions were received, including photographs of a visit by the Giants and walks along the quay with dogs.
The most compelling submissions have been curated into a commemorative digital photobook, available on the Albert Dock website from Monday, October 12. The images also feature in a Dock Shorts projection on the Maritime Museum façade of the inner quay, shown from 7.30pm to 10pm each evening.
A Historic Waterfront Hub
The dock, opened by Prince Albert on July 30, 1846, was illuminated for the first night of the projection, celebrating nearly two centuries as the hub of Liverpool’s waterfront. A gallery of photographs taken by ECHO photographer Iain Watts captures the event.
