The National Gallery has launched a quiz challenging the public on the number of Van Gogh Sunflowers paintings and the story of a cut-up Manet, as part of the Art Fund's £120,000 museum of the year prize.
Van Gogh's Sunflowers: How Many?
Curators from the National Gallery ask: how many paintings of sunflowers did Vincent van Gogh create? The answer is not as straightforward as it seems, with multiple versions in existence. The gallery holds one of the most famous, but the total number varies depending on the definition.
The Cut-Up Manet Mystery
Another question delves into Édouard Manet's 'The Execution of Emperor Maximilian', which was cut up after the artist's death. The National Gallery's version is a fragment, and the quiz asks visitors to explain the story behind its dismemberment.
The quiz is part of the Art Fund's museum of the year competition, which sees five shortlisted museums pose questions about their collections. The winner receives £120,000.
