Tributes paid to West Lothian community worker Fiona Pearson

West Lothian Council staff have paid tribute to a tireless community worker following her death. Fiona Pearson was a key figure in the voluntary sector in West Lothian for over three decades, and played a vital role in developing, expanding and strengthening social enterprises in the county during her time as co-ordinator at West Lothian Social Enterprise Network.

Council's tribute

The council unanimously agreed a motion extending its sincere gratitude to Fiona, from Whitburn, for her dedication and commitment to supporting the West Lothian community when she retired in 2019.

A council spokesperson said: “Throughout her career, Fiona worked in a range of roles to support individuals, families, communities and local organisations including organisations such as West Lothian Council, the Scottish Refugee Council, Human Rights Scotland, Voluntary Sector Gateway West Lothian Council and S.M.I.L.E Counselling.”

Funeral arrangements

Fiona’s funeral service will be held on Monday, August 24, at 11.30am at the West Lothian Crematorium, with all who knew Fiona welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, a collection will be held at the service for the charities that provided incredible care and support through Fiona’s illness: NHS Lothian Charity and Maggies.

MP's personal tribute

Bathgate and Linlithgow MP Kirsteen Sullivan paid her own tribute to Fiona. Writing on social media, Kirsteen said: “I’m so sad to learn of Fiona’s passing. I first met her when I was elected to West Lothian Council in 2017 when she held the reins at WL Social Enterprise Network.

“I found her to be down to earth, straight talking and someone who was all about the ‘doing’. Our paths crossed many times over the years with her various roles, including at SMILE.

“Immensely kind and always with a welcoming smile, she would never pass you by.

“I know she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. My thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.”

Fiona's own words

Following her retiral as supremo of the West Lothian Social Enterprise Network in 2019, Fiona said: “I have watched the growth of social enterprise in West Lothian in awe of the people on the ground.

“Our communities would be far poorer in every way without them, and the value they bring is far beyond turnover and profit. One of the most pleasing things during my time at WLSEN is the real sense of positive change within West Lothian’s Third Sector.

“I hope that the hard work and determination by all parties to develop renewed trust and respect continues long into the future.”
