The Uncanny Valley of Dinosaur Puppetry: Erth's Lifelike Creations

As the team at Erth gears up for an immersive new dinosaur production at the Sydney Opera House, starting on 8 April, they offer a rare glimpse into their puppetry workshop in Marrickville. For over 35 years, Erth has been captivating audiences worldwide with live dinosaur shows that blend art, design, and technology.

Mastering Realism in Puppetry

Artistic director Scott Wright explains that Erth operates in the uncanny valley, crafting puppets so lifelike they suspend disbelief. This approach involves meticulous attention to detail, from the scale of the creatures to their realistic movements, achieved through collaboration with artists from diverse creative backgrounds.

Associate director Samantha Hickey, seen with a baby T-rex puppet, highlights the hands-on nature of their work. In an era increasingly dominated by AI, Erth makes a conscious effort to keep their creations hand-crafted and old school, emphasizing the value of traditional artistry.

Inside the Workshop: Technology and Craftsmanship

At the Marrickville workshop, artists like Kat Lynch work within the jaws of projects, while head of design Steve Howarth showcases the animatronics that bring dinosaur puppets to life. The team utilizes a range of tools, including 3D printers and electronics, handled by specialists such as Holden Cohle.

Model toys serve as props or reference points, aiding in the design process. Some puppets, like a Siberian tiger that transforms into a saber-toothed tiger, evolve for different shows, demonstrating the adaptability and creativity of the Erth team.

Collaborative Efforts for the Sydney Show

As preparations intensify for the Sydney Opera House performance, artists including Keila Terencio de Paula, Albert David, and Samantha Hickey work on scenes, supported by custom rigs like puppet backpacks. This collaborative spirit ensures that each production is a unique, immersive experience.

Erth's commitment to blending artistry with innovation continues to set them apart in the world of puppetry, offering audiences a chance to step into a prehistoric world brought to life through skill and imagination.
