The Tartan Army has made new friends in Boston, joining Norway fans for their famous Viking Row. In a video uploaded to Instagram Reels, a crowd of Scots sat on the street, mimicking rowing motions and shouting 'Ro! Ro!' in unison while swaying. A blonde man in a Viking hat, known online as Mr Row Row Row, led the chant by banging on a small drum as passersby filmed the heartwarming moment of unity.
Norway's Viking Row Tradition
Norway's Viking Row is an organized crowd chant used at sporting events, acting out the synchronized rowing of an ancient Viking longship, accompanied by rhythmic chanting or drumming. Norwegian fans arrived in Boston earlier this week for their match against Iraq at Boston Stadium on Tuesday (June 16), which they won 4-1. Their next match is against Senegal on Tuesday (June 23) at MetLife Stadium, followed by a match against France on Friday (June 26) at Boston Stadium.
Social Media Reactions
Social media users were delighted by the two countries' paths crossing. One wrote: "Where would this World Cup be without countries like Scotland and Norway." A second joked: "That's how they're all getting home cause they've got no money left." A third replied: "My mother's parents were Scottish and Norwegian. I'm certain this would've brought tears to their eyes as it has mine." Another praised: "Seriously, this cultural exchange is the absolute greatest thing I have ever seen." Someone else added: "Unity - that is how it should be around the world." Yet another wrote: "The Scots are up for anything."
Scotland's World Cup Journey
It's a big night for Scotland as they play their second World Cup match against Morocco at Boston Stadium. The match kicks off at 6pm EST and is broadcast live on the BBC at 11pm BST. Last Saturday (June 13), Steve Clarke's team secured their first World Cup victory in 36 years with a 1-0 win against Haiti. Scotland shot to the top of group C thanks to John McGinn's goal in the 28th minute, with the Tartan Army celebrating wildly. A win tonight could potentially see Scotland qualify for the knockout stages for the first time in World Cup history. Scotland will then face Brazil at Miami Stadium next week on Wednesday (June 24).
