Suki Waterhouse: Motherhood Broke Open My Heart

Suki Waterhouse has described becoming a mother as an experience that 'absolutely broke open my heart' in a candid interview about her new album and life with partner Robert Pattinson.

The 34-year-old model, actress and musician released her third album Loveland on Friday, a project she says was created during the early stages of parenthood, a period of 'losing myself and also finding myself at the same time'.

Motherhood's Transformative Impact

Waterhouse, who has a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter with Pattinson, spoke emotionally about how having a child changed her perspective. 'Being a mum just f***ed me up in such a sweet way. It just absolutely broke open my heart, and I'm just madly in love,' she said, visibly tearing up during the interview.

She described birth as 'medieval' and reflected on the vulnerability she felt after her daughter was born. 'I remember thinking that I can't believe everybody does this and I can't believe how vulnerable I feel. I was crying all the time. It makes me cry now thinking about it. It was just... shocking.'

From It Girl to Serious Musician

Waterhouse, who was scouted at 16 and quickly became a fixture of London's fashion scene alongside Alexa Chung and Cara Delevingne, has now established herself as a credible musician. Her debut single Brutally was released in 2016, and she has since built a dedicated fanbase with her retro-infused pop sound.

She recalled the pushback she faced early in her music career, particularly after a negative article about Brutally failing to chart. 'I'd made about 200 or 300 songs by that point, and that was the first one where I felt I'd found this sound and actually made something to really be proud of, and then there was this piece saying that it was a chart disaster.'

Life with Robert Pattinson and Touring

Waterhouse met Pattinson at a games night in Los Angeles in 2018, and their relationship is woven throughout Loveland. The album includes tracks like Back in Love, which speaks of forging new closeness as parents, and Tiny Raisin, which playfully declares: 'He's all mine, and I hate his guts at the same time.'

The couple, who have a daughter, often travel together with Pattinson filming projects including The Batman: Part II. Waterhouse noted that while being apart is difficult, 'there's also so much enjoyment and fulfilment that both of us get from doing what we love.'

Supporting Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour

Just six weeks after giving birth, Waterhouse performed at Coachella and later supported Taylor Swift at Wembley Stadium. She praised Swift's generosity, saying: 'She'll always come in and thank every single person on your team and in your band, she always takes the time to make everyone feel important and included.'

Reflecting on the challenge of performing post-partum, Waterhouse said: 'It wasn't easy doing them in any way. I definitely feel like it was difficult to be healing and be in public at the same time.'

Looking Ahead

Waterhouse is about to embark on an extensive US tour, with her daughter joining her on the road. 'We have the baby bus that we decorate, and she runs around backstage and has a little scooter. She's the absolute queen of the tour.'

Despite the challenges, Waterhouse feels fortunate. 'I felt so insanely lucky that I had one of the most incredible female artists in the world sharing her stage with me, and I've been able to have a baby, and I'm so surrounded by love and support.'

Loveland is out now on Island Records.
