From being a bit crabbit to completely ragin, there are plenty of ways to describe when you're in a bad mood in Scotland. Scottish slang is full of colourful phrases to let someone know you are angry, with words for being mildly frustrated, completely fed up and absolutely furious.
Some of these words are so commonly used that you might not even realise how Scottish they sound until you use them outside the country. Whether you've had a bad day, someone has really got on your nerves or you're just in a foul mood, there is likely a Scottish word to sum up exactly how you're feeling.
Crabbit and Ragin
One of the more familiar Scottish words, crabbit is used to describe someone who is grumpy, bad tempered or easily annoyed. It is often used when someone is in a particularly foul mood, even if they are not completely furious. You might hear someone say: “She’s been pure crabbit aw day.” Once you hear that phrase you will know you need to avoid that person until they’ve came out their mood.
If you're ragin, you're not just a little bit annoyed - you're absolutely furious. It is often used when something has really got under your skin, with someone who is ragin likely to be far from impressed by whatever has happened. An example of the word in a sentence would be: "He was absolutely ragin when he found out."
Bealin and Radge
Someone who is bealin is swelling with rage or festering with anger. It is another way of describing that feeling when something has really wound you up and you can’t let it go, no matter what. If someone is bealin, you can usually tell they are not in the mood for an argument. More than often if your bealin, you want to be left alone.
If someone is radge, they are wildly angry, furious or acting out in a temper. It can describe someone who has completely lost their cool and is behaving in a particularly heated way. Calling someone radge can also suggest that they are acting a little wild or out of control.
Fizzin and Scunnered
If you're fizzin, you’re absolutely boiling with anger. The word gives the impression of someone bubbling away with a bad temper, particularly when something has really pushed their buttons. You could describe someone as fizzin when they are clearly struggling to keep their temper under control.
Scunnered is slightly different from the other words on the list, as it does not necessarily mean that you are angry. Instead, it describes feeling completely fed up, exhausted or sick of a situation. Often or not when you’re over the situation and your anger has left, you would say "I’m scunnered".
