Ringo Starr Honoured by University of Liverpool in LA Ceremony

Ringo Starr has sent a special message to Liverpool after being awarded an honorary degree from the University of Liverpool. The Beatles legend turned 86 on Tuesday and was conferred as an Honorary Doctor of Music at a private ceremony held in Beverly Hills Park, Los Angeles, with chancellors travelling from the university to mark the occasion.

Honorary Degree Conferred in LA Ceremony

Sir Richard Starkey, known globally as Ringo Starr, was joined by family and friends at the public event, which featured live performances from some of his favourite artists. University of Liverpool Chancellor Wendy Beetlestone presented the award, recognising his influential musical work with The Beatles that has shaped Liverpool's identity and global reputation.

Message to Liverpool and Graduates

Speaking about the honour, Ringo said: "I want to thank the University of Liverpool for this Honorary Degree and for coming all the way to LA to bestow it. I'm really honoured. Today is my birthday, and as everyone knows, I was born in Liverpool. It is my hometown and I'll always love it." He reflected on his career choices, noting that his family discouraged him from becoming a drummer, but added: "They could have been right! But they weren't – it all worked out." He encouraged graduates: "Don't be afraid to follow your dreams – or take that right turn and see where it goes… it could lead to an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Liverpool."
