The new musical One Day is set to make its West End debut this autumn at the Garrick Theatre. Based on David Nicholls' bestselling novel, the production follows the enduring and often complicated relationship between Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew.
West End Transfer After Edinburgh Run
The London transfer comes after a preview run at The Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh. Adapted by David Greig, the production features music and lyrics by Johnnyswim members Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano Ramirez, with additional material by Jeremy Sams.
Storyline and Previous Adaptations
Spanning two decades, the story revisits Emma and Dexter every year on St Swithin's Day (July 15), charting their journey from university graduates to adulthood. Nicholls' novel was first adapted into the 2011 film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, before inspiring the acclaimed 2024 One Day series starring Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod.
Cast and Creative Team
Jamie Muscato, a WhatsOnStage and Olivier Award nominee, will reprise the role of Dexter alongside rising star Sharon Rose as Emma. Their casting was first announced ahead of the Edinburgh run last summer. The production is directed by Max Webster, with choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille. The creative team also includes set and costume designer Rae Smith, lighting designer Bruno Poet, sound designer Simon Baker, orchestrator Simon Hale, and casting director Stuart Burt.
Producer Statements
Producers Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska of Melting Pot said: “From the moment we encountered One Day, we recognised its extraordinary emotional power. This is a story for anyone who has been in love, for anyone whose life hasn’t gone to plan, for anyone whose life has, for anyone who has had a parent, or a child, or a friend – so everyone really – which is why it has resonated with millions of people around the world. With a remarkable creative team, a score that takes us on the emotional rollercoaster of Emma and Dexter’s journey, and the world-class talents of Jamie Muscato and Sharon Rose originating the lead roles, One Day the Musical promises to be a very special show indeed. We cannot wait to bring this story to life on the West End stage.”
Performance Dates
One Day the Musical begins performances at the Garrick Theatre on November 17 and is currently booking until March 14, 2026.
