Netflix fans are 'obsessed' with a historical drama that has been hailed as 'exceptional' and 'one of the best dramas ever'. The series, Mr Sunshine, is set in the 19th century and follows a boy born into slavery who escapes to America, only to return to Korea years later as a US Marine Corps officer. He uncovers a sinister conspiracy and finds love.
Plot and Reception
The story begins with Eugene Choi (played by Lee Byung-hun), who returns to Korea in 2018's Mr Sunshine after the 1871 military conflict between America and Joseon Korea. Upon his return, he discovers Japan's plans to colonise Korea while falling for an aristocratic freedom fighter. Despite comprising 24 episodes, each over an hour long, Netflix subscribers have heaped praise on the series.
One viewer wrote on Rotten Tomatoes: 'It's a beautiful movie and the balance between the heavy plots and storylines and the quirky, perfectly delivered humour was exceptionally performed.' Another added: 'I knew it would break my heart but it was too beautiful to not watch.'
Critical Acclaim
A second fan concurred: 'Best historical drama ever. I cried a lot, but every little detail is just perfect. This is a masterpiece.' A third remarked: 'This is one of the best drama series I have ever watched. Surely left me heartbroken for Eugene's ending but I will never forget it or move on from it.'
Another enthused: 'Just amazing and I'm obsessed. Setting the bar very high for Korean historical dramas.' Yet another fan said: 'An absolute must-watch! Plot, making, acting, even dialogues were perfection! To say that I was mindblowned is an understatement.'

Taking the leading role of Eugene is Lee Byung-hun, known for portraying Hwang In-ho (The Front Man) in Netflix's Squid Game. He is joined by Kim Tae-ri from The Handmaiden, Hospital Playlist's Yoo Yeon-seok, and Byun Yo-han from Misaeng: Incomplete Life.
Mr Sunshine is available to stream on Netflix.
