Monty Don heartbroken as dog Patti dies suddenly

Gardeners' World presenter Monty Don has announced the sudden death of his beloved dog Patti, a Yorkshire Terrier, describing the loss as heartbreaking.

The 71-year-old television gardener shared a series of pictures of Patti on Instagram, telling fans: “I have sad news. Our lovely Patti died suddenly this morning after a very short illness.” He added: “She was much loved, and lit up our lives. We are all heartbroken.”

Co-stars offer condolences

Monty's television colleagues were quick to offer their support. Countryfile star Matt Baker wrote: “Thinking of you Monty. As I always say, the reason we love our dogs so much is because the only time they break our hearts is when they leave us.”

Garden historian Stephen Parker added: “Oh Monty. I doubt I will ever get over the sudden loss of my beautiful black Labrador Rupert, who collapsed on Boxing Day morning. They leave such a gap in our hearts.”

Fans share their sympathy

Fans also expressed their sadness, with one writing: “My thoughts to all in the Don household – human, canine and otherwise.” Another posted: “So sorry to hear about sweet Patti.”

Monty has previously lost other dogs: Peggy, a Brittany Spaniel, died in January this year just weeks short of her 16th birthday, while Nigel and Nell died in 2020 and 2023 respectively. He is now only dog dad to Golden Retriever Ned.

A garden of memories

Monty has buried all his late dogs within the woodland area of his extensive garden. He told Saga Magazine: “The garden is theirs as much as mine. It's a good way of remembering them every day as we walk past - and they're part of the garden.”
