Manchester Day 2026: New Route, Catalan Twist, Full Schedule

Manchester Day will return on Sunday July 26, 2026, with a new parade route, a Catalan twist featuring performers from Barcelona, and a full programme of free family-friendly events across the city centre from midday to 5pm.

New Parade Route and Sunday Switch

For the first time, the event will be held on a Sunday instead of a Saturday. The parade will follow a new route, setting off from St Peter's Square at 1pm, travelling down Peter Street onto Deansgate, right onto St Mary's Gate, right onto Cross Street, then left onto Princess Street, and back to St Peter's Square. Motorists should be aware of road and tram closures, with further details to be confirmed by Manchester Council.

Catalan Collaboration

This year's event features a strong Catalan influence, following Manchester's role as Guest City at Barcelona's La Mercè festival in 2025. Performers from Barcelona will join the celebrations, including The Ultimate Player's Handbook, a dance piece by Company Chameleon and Clementine & Lisard; acrobatic show Too Much by Elelei; an immersive theatre piece from Kamchàtka; and Zum-Zum Theatre's herd of pink inflatable hippos. Councillor Pat Karney, Chair of Manchester Day, said: 'We can't wait to welcome our friends from Barcelona to our wonderful city for them to join with us in celebrating friendship, community and culture at Manchester Day this year.'

Parade Highlights

The parade will feature over 500 performers, including community groups, giant puppets, and costumes inspired by Catalan tradition. Themes include damsels in distress, mischievous gnomes, a roaming dragon, unicycling knights, a herd of hippos, giant polar bears, acrobatic librarians, and a giant inflatable whale. A bookish theme ties into the national year of reading, with visitors encouraged to spot books and characters along the route.

Street Theatre and Music

Pop-up street theatre includes Kill Will (two battling bards), Oxbridge undergrads in a punt, Motionhouse's dance-circus show, and TS Crew's No Sugar No Milk (martial arts, dance, beatboxing). Music acts include Baked A La Ska, Mr Swing's Dance Orchestra, Mr Wilson's Second Liners, local choirs, ukuleles, and the Always Drinking Marching Band from Barcelona.

Family Activities

Albert Square will host free family fun for the first time since 2018, with a finale. Manchester Central Library will open specially for story-themed activities. British Cycling and British Taekwondo will offer interactive have-a-go activities. Events run from 12pm to 5pm across the city centre.

Cultural Partnership

The collaboration stems from a 2024 Memorandum of Understanding between Manchester and Barcelona. Xavier Marcé, Councillor for Culture and Creative Industries of Barcelona City Council, said: 'Barcelona is delighted to participate in Manchester Day and to strengthen the cultural ties that connect our two cities.' Anna Guitart, Director of Institut Ramon Llull, added: 'Manchester Day is an exceptional platform to showcase the quality, diversity and innovative capacity of Catalan street arts.'
