Lady Louise Windsor graduated from St Andrews University on Thursday, where her rarely used public name was revealed during the poignant ceremony. The daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh was announced as “Louise Mountbatten-Windsor” as she walked to the stage in the university's Younger Hall.
Graduation Ceremony Details
Lady Louise kneeled on a cushion for the iconic “capping” ritual, where Chancellor Dame Anne Pringle briefly touched her head with a 17th-century velvet cup and said the words “et super te” (Latin for ‘and upon you’). She was dressed in formal attire consisting of a black skirt, a crisp white shirt, black heels, and her graduation robes.
Mountbatten-Windsor is the family name used by all descendants of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip when required. As Louise holds no royal titles, she is entitled to use the name.
Official Photographs Released
A few hours after the ceremony, Buckingham Palace released two new photographs from the young royal’s graduation. One showed proud parents Edward and Sophie standing beside their daughter, who is wearing her graduation robes. A second photograph showed Louise proudly posing on her own. The pictures were taken at University House right after the graduation ceremony.
Future Plans
Louise is not expected to become a working royal. It is understood that the 22-year-old will have a gap year working, volunteering, and travelling, before exploring career opportunities. She now holds a degree in English following her graduation.
