Kelly Macdonald has hinted that her character DI Joanne Davidson could make a comeback in the upcoming seventh series of Line of Duty. Speaking on ITV's This Morning on August 18, the Scottish actress suggested there is a chance her character could reappear, given that Jo was left alive at the end of the last series.
Tease on This Morning
When asked by presenters Craig Doyle and Angela Scanlon if there was a possibility of Jo's return to the BBC drama, Macdonald replied: "I suppose so. I always feel like if your character's alive there's always [a way]." She then added: "It's a possibility, I don't know. I couldn't say, who knows."
Macdonald played DCI Joanne Davidson in the sixth series, which ended with her character entering witness protection. The actress also reflected on filming during the pandemic, describing it as a different experience from her previous work. She said: "I'm sort of corner shop famous in Glasgow, if you know what I mean, because of Trainspotting but Line of Duty was a whole other ball game and I did get the fear slightly."
Production wrapped
The new series was announced in spring 2026, with filming taking place in Belfast. The synopsis states: "In series seven AC-12 has been disbanded and rebranded the Inspectorate of Police Standards. Anticorruption work has never been more difficult and in this challenging climate Steve Arnott (Martin Compston), Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) are assigned their most sensitive case so far."
Vicky McClure confirmed on July 11 that production had wrapped, sharing photos on Instagram with co-stars Martin Compston and Adrian Dunbar. She wrote: "And we're Off Duty!! The last four months spent with two of my best mates. The brilliant cast & crew pulled out all the stops to bring @jed_mercurio script to life…thank you. Home time now, so can't wait, missed my lot every single day."
Creator Jed Mercurio commented: "A well-earned rest for the Tremendous Trio after a monumental shoot." Fans have expressed excitement for the new season, with one writing: "Mother of God - I can't wait to watch this! All of us across Britain will be putting our feet up with a cup of tea, and a pack of biscuits - letsss goooo!" Another asked: "Okay so drop the release date????"
