Former Strictly Come Dancing star Janette Manrara is taking on a new career challenge, joining Stranger Things actor Noah Schnapp for the world premiere of a new play. The pair will appear in Affluenza, a production written and directed by Andy Sandberg, set to premiere at Riverside Studios in London.
What is Affluenza about?
The play is set in the wealthy Hamptons and follows the aftermath of a teenager's drunken car journey, which ends in devastating circumstances. Its central storyline questions whether extreme wealth can blur a person's understanding of right and wrong.
According to the production's synopsis: "When a teen's drunken car ride ends in devastation, the verdict comes down to one question. Is it possible to be too affluent to know the difference between right and wrong?"
The play will also tackle issues including privilege, family legacy and accountability, alongside an exploration of the US justice system. Its synopsis adds: "Set in the ultra-wealthy Hamptons, the show explores themes of moral accountability, family legacy and the American justice system, while asking: 'Do any of us truly understand the cost and generational impact of privilege and opulence?'"
Janette's announcement and fan reaction
Janette announced her involvement on social media, sharing her excitement at being part of the production. She wrote: "I can finally say that I will be joining the cast of the world premiere of AFFLUENZA at Riverside Studios in London."
She also opened up about her excitement at exploring a different form of storytelling. Having previously used dance, movement and presenting to connect with audiences, the star spoke openly about storytelling. She added: "I have always loved telling stories — through dance, movement and presenting. Now, I get to tell one in a whole new way… and this one is a conversation starter. New chapter. New challenges. Excited for what's to come."
Her announcement was met with an enthusiastic response from fans, while her husband and fellow Strictly dancer Aljaž Škorjanec was among those to congratulate her. He wrote: "Proud doesn't describe it! Well done Bučka."
Support from Strictly co-stars
Janette also received messages of support from a number of her Strictly co-stars, including Gorka Márquez, Fleur East, Jowita Przystał, Dianne Buswell and Amy Dowden. Fleur East wrote: "So exciting!!! Congratulations." While Ashley Roberts said: "Yes sis!!!!!"
The production will give Janette the opportunity to take on a new creative role, stepping away from the dancefloor and into the world of theatre alongside Schnapp. Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC in September 2026.
