Hugh Jackman has declared he will continue playing Wolverine until he is 90 years old, vowing never to retire from the iconic Marvel role. The Australian actor, who has portrayed the X-Men mutant in 11 Marvel films, including the recent blockbuster Deadpool vs Wolverine, made the statement in a recent interview.
Jackman's Commitment to Wolverine
Speaking to Project Big Screen, Jackman, now 57, said: “I’m 57. I’m doing it till I’m 90.” He acknowledged that he had previously threatened to retire after 2017's Logan, only to return for subsequent films. “I am never saying 'never' ever again,” he added. “Every time you're (doing an interview), you gotta go, 'Nope, I'm not doing that again,' But then you keep making another one. And it's a big big hit.”
Jackman is rumored to appear in the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday movie, scheduled for December 2026. However, his name is notably absent from initial cast announcements, which include Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier and Ian McKellen as Magneto.
No Advice for Future Wolverines
With Marvel working on an X-Men reboot, Jackman has no intention of offering advice to the next actor to play Wolverine. He explained: “I’ll do a little time capsule for them. I’m not going to say anything to whoever plays him, ’cause no one said anything to me, which I really am thrilled about.” He added that he had not read the comics before taking the role, saying: “I was just coming to it fresh. And I learned a lot over the years. Of course, I’ve got my own take, but it must be melding in with me in some way. I hope someone just comes in and does whatever the f*** they want and makes it their own.”
X-Men Reboot in Development
Jake Schreier, reportedly directing the X-Men reboot, confirmed to Empire: “I can’t say anything about it, but we’ve started work on X-Men, and that’s obviously very, very exciting.” Marvel's multiple timelines could allow Jackman to continue as Wolverine in one universe while a new actor takes over in another.
