Welsh contestants on the Channel 4 programme Four in a Bed faced severe criticism after guests discovered dog hair in the fridge, mould, and other cleanliness issues at their property, Tin Can Retreat in Ceredigion. In a repeat episode aired on Saturday, June 27, proprietors Stuart and Amy defended their vintage Americana-themed accommodation but were ultimately underpaid by all three rival teams.
Cleanliness Complaints Mount
Shortly after arriving, guests Oleg and Emma from Newquay, Mandy and Elly from a Devon glampsite, and Steve and Mandy from a Devon country pub raised objections. They reported mould in the fridge, “minging” dirt, dead flies behind the sink, dog hair in the fridge, dust and water along windowsills, and uncleaned toilets. Stuart initially dismissed the severity, calling the feedback a “dagger to the heart.”
Underpayments on Payment Day
On payment day, the three teams underpaid Stuart and Amy by a total of £74. Mandy and Elly complained about a smell from the diesel heater, causing headaches and nausea. Stuart insisted a carbon monoxide detector was present, stating, “I just have to disagree with you... I'm not wrong.” Steve and Mandy gave a cleanliness score of four, calling it “massively disappointing.” Emma described the condition as “beyond grubby,” noting crusty residue under the toilet seat.
Reality Check for Owners
Stuart admitted the feedback was a “reality check,” saying, “We're not a new business... we need to go back and work out where it's going wrong.” He accepted all payments but deemed the £50 underpayment from Steve and Mandy as “harsh.” Mandy from the glampsite acknowledged the result would be a “shock” but insisted it was “justified.” Tin Can Retreat came in fourth place, with Stuart vowing to implement fixes for all issues raised.
