The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge has been named the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2026, winning a £100,000 prize. The award, announced on 24 June 2026, recognises the museum's outstanding achievements in exhibitions, community programming, and digital innovation.
Innovative Exhibitions and Community Focus
The museum impressed judges with its diverse programme, including the critically acclaimed exhibition "The Art of the Possible" which explored the intersection of art and science. Director Luke Syson said: "This award is a testament to the extraordinary work of our team and the support of our visitors. It belongs to everyone who has made the museum a place of discovery and connection."
Digital Transformation and Accessibility
The Fitzwilliam also stood out for its digital initiatives, such as the virtual tour platform that reached over 500,000 online visitors in the past year. The museum expanded free admission hours and launched a series of workshops for underrepresented groups, increasing annual attendance by 15% to 650,000.
Competition and Judging
The museum competed against four other shortlisted institutions: the V&A Dundee, the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and the Turner Contemporary in Margate. Judges praised the Fitzwilliam for its "bold curatorial vision and deep engagement with local communities."
Impact of the Prize
The £100,000 prize will fund a new community gallery and expand the museum's education programme. Syson added: "This investment will allow us to reach even more people and break down barriers to accessing art and culture."
