Death in Paradise star Gary Carr, who played Sergeant Fidel Best in the BBC show before leaving in 2014, is almost unrecognisable in a 'masterpiece' period drama. The actor took on the role of American jazz vocalist Jack Ross in the fourth series of Downton Abbey.
Gary Carr's Role in Downton Abbey
Gary Carr's character Jack Ross was involved in a secret romance with Lady Rose, played by Lily James. The storyline focused on their clandestine relationship and the challenges posed by racial and class differences. Jack ultimately called off their engagement after realising the public condemnation they would face.
Reaction to Casting
Gary became the first black actor to feature in Downton Abbey, which prompted divided responses from some viewers who accused creator Julian Fellowes of tokenism. However, Carr dismissed this, stating: 'He is an African-American, and that prevents him from following his heart at times. He has to make sacrifices based on the fact that he is a black man in the UK at that time. But Jack is also intelligent and stylish and cool.'
Departure from Death in Paradise
Carr left Death in Paradise in 2014 when his character Fidel Best transferred to the police service on St Lucia. Co-star Kris Marshall revealed that Carr wished to 'move on' from the role. Downton Abbey is available to stream on ITVX, while Death in Paradise can be viewed on BBC iPlayer.
