Coronation Street star Sydney Martin has been compared to one of the long-running show's former cast members, who is now landing Netflix roles, as she gave a rare insight into her acting world.
The actress, from Rossendale, made her debut in the ITV soap, which is filmed in Salford, two years ago as Betsy Swain, initially seen as Sabrina Adetiba's mate, before it was soon revealed that the teen was the daughter of long-standing character DS Lisa Swain.
Biggest storyline to date
While she was quickly involved in the Weatherfield drama, it was earlier this year that Sydney got her biggest storyline to date, as Betsy had a stroke at the age of 18.
It was later confirmed that the strokes, as Betsy had a second while in the hospital, were the result of neck artery damage from a temporary loss of circulation.
As viewers saw, doctors spoke to Betsy about the cause, which is when the teen had to explain to her mum that her boyfriend, Dylan Wilson, had strangled her during consensual sex, despite both believing the pressure applied was minimal.
Recovery and award nomination
Since then, Corrie viewers have witnessed Betsy's challenging recovery as she transitioned from hospital to home and navigated significant life changes, with the soap trying to highlight the profound physical and emotional impact of a stroke at such a young age.
Marking her success with the storyline, it was recently revealed that Sydney is among those nominated for the Best Performance gong at the TV Choice Awards 2027, alongside her Corrie co-stars Tina O'Brien (Sarah Platt), Gareth Pierce (Todd Grimshaw), Sue Devaney (Debbie Webster), Jacob Roberts (Kit Green) and Mikey North (Gary Windass).
Social media reaction
But away from her Corrie role, Sydney is often seen sharing updates on social media, both from her personal life and how she works in her career, even when not on the famous cobbles. In her latest video, the soap star could be seen acting out a comedy scene, with her captioning the clip: "Fun comedy scene! @dnaperformanceresource @jolyon_benson ur a gorg scene partner."
And it didn't take long for the comments to come flooding in. Emmerdale star Amelia Flanagan gushed: "So talented." @stephen_millss echoed: "Very talented, a Michele Keegan in the making!" @lovingcaitsyd said: "You're so talented Syd! so proud of you." @kirstarmstrong1 replied: "I can't wait to watch what you go on to do Sydney as your RIDICULOUSLY talented and will be leading dramas/ films soon."
