The Children's Heart Unit Fund (CHUF) held its annual Toddle Family Fun Day at Close House in Northumberland on June 28, 2026, bringing together hundreds of families from across the North East. The event featured a one-mile toddle, funfair rides, character appearances, and food options, all in celebration of CHUF's Heart Heroes—children who have faced or continue to face serious cardiac challenges.
Event Highlights and Activities
Each participant received a medal, certificate, and goodie bag for their sponsorship and participation. The day also marked the 20th anniversary of the Freeman Hospital's clown doctors programme, which provides entertainment and relief to families in the hospital. The Sir Graham Wylie Foundation supported the event, enabling it to be held at this scale.
Charlotte Campbell, director of fundraising and operations at CHUF, said: "We have had a fantastic day at the CHUF Toddle Family Fun Day, and it has been all about celebrating our amazing heart heroes. We bring families of children and young people with heart conditions together to celebrate what an incredible journey they have been on."
Fundraising and Impact
For over 42 years, CHUF has delivered vital support to the NHS, funding life-saving equipment and providing additional support to families. The Toddle event raises additional funds to help more children and families receiving cardiac care at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle and other locations in the North East. The event also benefits from the clown doctors, who have been bringing smiles for two decades.
Campbell added: "They joined us today to take part in a one-mile toddle, and then had a fantastic time at our funfair at the end. Today's event is extra special as we are celebrating the clown doctors programme, as it has been 20 years of them providing support and entertainment to families who are with us at the Freeman Hospital."
