Argentinian media have shared their verdict on Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez after his encouraging performance for Argentina in a 2-0 friendly victory over Honduras. The 28-year-old centre-back is staking his claim for a starting spot at the upcoming World Cup.
Martinez Impresses in Argentina Victory
Martinez played a key role in Argentina's triumph, helping his side keep a clean sheet while also producing a memorable moment in the opposition's box. He attempted a spectacular bicycle kick that narrowly missed the target, drawing praise from the Argentine press.
Despite a disrupted season at Manchester United due to injuries, Martinez has cemented his place in Lionel Scaloni's squad. He made 18 league appearances for the Red Devils and started the final three matches of the season, keeping his World Cup ambitions firmly on track.
Clarin's Assessment
Argentine outlet Clarin handed Martinez a rating of six out of ten, noting that he faced little threat from the Honduran attack. He was described as being 'solid defensively' and encountered no difficulties before being substituted for Cristian Romero shortly after the hour mark.
However, it was his involvement in the opposition penalty area that drew the most attention. The defender 'surprised everyone' with an overhead kick that went over the crossbar, with the report noting it was nearly a 'spectacular goal'.
La Nacion's Verdict
La Nacion also awarded Martinez a six but branded him a 'dedicated soldier'. The publication lauded the United star for his 'great intensity' and for 'never letting up'. Martinez demonstrated he was 'agile' after coming close to scoring with the bicycle kick.
The match report noted: 'After several injuries that hampered his playing time at Manchester United, he looks fit and ready whenever needed.' Martinez will be keen to catch the eye of boss Scaloni, having played in five of Argentina's seven matches at the previous World Cup.
Martinez was part of the Argentina squad that lifted the World Cup in 2022 and delivered an encouraging display against Honduras ahead of this summer's tournament. Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez broke the deadlock from the penalty spot before Atletico Madrid's Giuliano Simeone doubled the advantage after the interval.
