Architect Seizes 'Magic' Moment from Madrid Window with Phone Camera
José Luis Morales Martín, an architect residing in Las Rozas de Madrid, a suburb near the Spanish capital, captured a remarkable photograph from his living room window on a sweltering September afternoon. After finishing his lunch, Martín heard noises from outside and peered down to see two teenagers engaged in a game of basketball in the communal courtyard below.
"I was amazed by the light and immediately went to get my phone to capture the scene," Martín recalls. "The geometry of the pavement pattern, the shadows of the building, and the figures playing with a basketball ... I just waited for the magic to appear – and then it did." The image, titled 'From the Window, 2023', was shot using a Huawei P30 smartphone, showcasing how everyday moments can transform into artistic expressions through keen observation.
Bridging Architecture and Photography Through Light and Composition
As an architect leading projects in the commercial sector, Martín draws a clear parallel between his professional work and photography. "There's a clear relationship between architecture and photography," he explains. "For me, architecture is an art form that evokes emotion in those who see it, inhabit it, or use it, in the same way that the photographer's eye attempts to convey a message, an emotion, or simply document what's happening around them."
He highlights common elements such as light and shadow, composition, geometry, human presence, and scale, which require skillful handling to achieve optimal results in both fields. This interdisciplinary approach enriches his creative output, allowing him to blend structural design with visual storytelling.
Embracing Smartphone Photography in Everyday Settings
Martín estimates that he uses a DSLR camera for approximately 50% of his photography work, relying on his phone for the remainder. "No matter what you use, even in the most ordinary places you can find special moments to capture," he asserts. This philosophy underscores a growing trend in the photography world, where smartphones are increasingly valued for their convenience and ability to seize spontaneous scenes without the bulk of traditional equipment.
