Oxford tops global university rankings for fourth consecutive year

Oxford University has been named the world's best university for the fourth year in a row, according to the latest Times Higher Education (THE) world university rankings. The UK institution leads the list, which rates more than 1,300 universities across 92 countries based on teaching, research, citations, industry income, and international outlook.

Cambridge University secured third place, while Imperial College London dropped one spot to tenth. Other UK institutions in the top 50 include University College London (15th), the London School of Economics and Political Science (joint 27th), Edinburgh University (30th), and King's College London (joint 36th). Overall, the UK has 28 universities in the top 200, down from 29 last year, with almost two-thirds falling at least one place.

The United States dominates the top five, with the California Institute of Technology taking second place, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in fourth and fifth respectively. Phil Baty, THE chief knowledge officer, noted that increasing competition from Asian institutions is squeezing the UK out of traditional top spots, with Japan displacing the UK as the second most-represented country overall.
