Manchester United's search for a new left-back on transfer deadline day led to a shock approach for Rayan Ait-Nouri, it has emerged. The Red Devils were active in the summer window, bringing in Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba as central midfielders, but they were frustrated in their attempts to sign a left-back to compete with first-choice Luke Shaw.
City's stance blocks Ait-Nouri deal
According to The Manchester Evening News, United approached Manchester City to ask whether Ait-Nouri would be available after his agent offered the defender to them. City would only consider a loan with an obligation to make the move permanent for a player who joined The Etihad last summer. With United not interested in committing to a permanent deal, a transfer for the Algeria international failed to materialise.
United's other left-back options
Ait-Nouri, signed for £36m from Wolves, has been behind Nico O'Reilly and Josko Gvardiol in City's pecking order, with Gvardiol starting the season at left-back. Shaw is United's only senior recognised left-back, with Patrick Dorgu now seen as an option further forward on the wing.
United also made enquiries for Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde in recent days, but again they were only interested in a loan deal for the 22-year-old. They also considered a late move for Racing Santander's Jorge Salinas before deciding against pursuing a deal.
